of my experience.
(IOSH TECH SP, MaPS)
I worked for British Gas for 30 years, as an engineer, technical officer,
project manager and finally a housing manager.
I left in June 1995 as the effect of the new CDM regulations
where coming into force.
As I came from a highly safety conscious industry and was familiar with
carrying out risk assessments to produce method statements, I decided
to turn to Health and Safety as a new career
In August that year I had started work as a Planning Supervisor and Health
and Safety Advisor and have been working in that capacity, full time since then.
I specialise in construction health and safety and have the N.E.B.O.S.H.
( National Examining Board of Occupational Safety and Health) General Certificate,
have attained Tech SP membership of I.O.S.H. (Institute of Occupational Safety
and Health) via the NVQ 3 and am currently working towards an NVQ 4 in occupational
Health and Safety. I have attended courses on scaffolding, confined space working,
asbestos, ladders, mobile elevated work platforms etc.
I have Professional Indemnity Insurance, and am a Member of the Association of Project
Safety (Formally known as The Association of Planning Supervisors).

Client base
I give Health and Safety advice including writing Company Health and Safety Policies,
Construction Phase Health and Safety Plans, risk assessments, method statements,
COSHH assessments, site inspections etc.
Although I have carried out work for a Local Authority for some years, my main clients
are small to medium building companies and sub contractors i.e. plumbers, bricklayers,
plasterers, roofers, painters etc. whose organisation cannot support the cost of a full
time safety advisor.
In my role as Planning Supervisor I have been involved in a variety of projects,
which included the construction of portal frame warehouses, a number of house and flat
developments, commercial and residential refurbishments.
